I have had the amazing experience of working with my family to rescue animals, especially horses, over the last 7 years. We are by far "A rescue facility", but we do our best to help when we can. We rent my grandfather's 23 acre farm where we keep 6 horses, 2 goats, 10 steer, 2 rabbits and several cats.
We work together to feed and care for the animals everyday before school and in the afternoon between practices. I have found that my children have a greater sense of responsibility, more compassion and an interest in volunteering for other causes.
Over the years we have even been asked to bring the horses to benefits for rides, to carnivals for their petting zoos and other events. In the course of doing so, we have found that allowing children with handicaps, behavioral issues, or autism have also benefited greatly from being near the horses.
It is a fmily dream to open an equine rescue/ equine therapy facility in which their is no charge for time spent with the animals to those who are in need. I have had a great deal of experience in promoting events and hope to find businesses and organizations who would be willing to donate financially to help the project.
In the meantime, I am always willing to have a parent bring their child to our small farm to ride, brush, feed or just spend time with the animals. If you are a parent of a child who has a mental or physical handicap, autism, or behavioral issues and you have not taken advantage of the benefits of equine therapy, I strongly suggest that you do some further research.
If you currently have a child in an equine therapy program, I would love to hear about your experiences, so leave a comment.
